The Story

Modernization project. The focus of LAUSD’s SLC program is to create distinct, branded environments which relate identifiably to the areas of study addressed by each of the school’s departments or Small Learning Communities. Goals in the design and development of these communities, included the intangibles of strengthening student pride and helping to create a sense of identity for each student as both an individual and a member of a specific ‘community’ within the school. Featuring seven unique community designs, Birmingham, one of the largest high schools in the country, is the first in a series of SLC projects involving L.A. Design Associates.
