The Story

This sustainable garden in the hills over Glendale, showcases native and drought tolerant plantings along with state of the art irrigation to curb the loss of water in the long, hot summer months.

The goal of the project was to increase the amount of usable land by terracing certain slopes and carving out strategic pockets of space where possible. The program included a stone Wine Terrace, critically sited to take advantage of sunsets over the city, and a cooling ‘water wall’ located opposite the glass walled family room.

The Owner, a creative couple pairing an architect with a symphony violinist, further requested an outdoor performance area with seating for 50. Carved out of the rear hillside, a naturalistic amphitheater provided the ideal setting for outdoor concerts and musical gatherings. A hidden overlook amidst the trees, a grove of fruit trees and a small arbor complete the scene.
